Day 55 – Hendaye – Olhette

I won’t lie, it is not fun to loop back around to the East Coast to finish this challenge.
Today’s hike should have been done on June 1st as day 1 😢 but it is what it is.
Nonetheless, the starting point for the hike is the GR10 sign across from an old casino by the Atlantic Ocean. This section of the GR10 crosses the Basque Country.
My brother is with me today which makes the day goes by faster.
It is a 13 miles hike to Olhette. The hike starts with a lot of walking on roads going up and down until we start climbing the 1st hill. It is funny to end with what should have been the beginning because the hills ate small compared to all I have climbed so far. But we climbed several of them back to back.
We end up at the border of Spain and France at the Col d’Ibardin where we find « ventas ». Ventas are stores located in the Basque Country near the border between Spain and France. They attract French customers because they have lower prices due to the lower cost of living in and especially significantly lower taxes in Spain (VAT). Especially for tobacco, alcohol and fuels. Ventas have been around for a long time in Spain, as they are found in the story of Don Quixote.
We finish back on the road to get to Olhette.

Je ne vais pas mentir, ce n'est pas marrant de revenir de ce côté pour terminer le GR1. La randonnée d'aujourd'hui aurait dû être faite le 1er juin comme jour 1 et non pas jour 55 😢 mais c'est comme ça !
Le point de départ de la randonnée est le panneau GR10 face à un ancien casino au bord de l'océan Atlantique à Hendaye. C’est le début de la section du GR10 Pays Basque.
Mon frère est avec moi aujourd'hui ce qui fait que la journée passe plus vite.
C'est une randonnée de 21 km pour aller à Olhette. La randonnée commence par beaucoup de marche sur des routes vallonnées jusqu'à ce que nous commencions à gravir la 1ère colline (on en fera plusieurs). C'est drôle de terminer avec ce qui aurait dû être le début car les collines sont petites par rapport à tout ce que j'ai grimpé jusqu'à présent.
On se retrouve à la frontière de l'Espagne et de la France au Col d'Ibardin où l'on trouve des « ventas ».
Nous finissons la randonnée sur la route pour rejoindre Olhette.
